Web accessibility

To make our web site as accessible as possible to everyone, we have implemented the following accessibility features to comply with W3C's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0, level A.

1. Semantic markup

Pages are coded in a structured, semantic way, which makes it easier for screen readers and other alternative browsing devices to interpret the content. Cascading style sheets are used for visual layout, keeping the structure and the presentation of the page separate.

Javascript is used to enhance usability, however pages are fully accessible if these technologies are turned off or unsupported.

2. Images

All content images, advertising banners and icons are supplied with descriptive and meaningful text equivalents. Images are not used to represent text, all headings are styled with the help of CSS and can be resized to suit users needs.

3. Font sizes

Font sizes are coded in relative units, therefore Web site layout accommodates resizing text even in Internet Explorer for Windows.

4. Navigation aids

An option to bypass navigation links and go directly to the content of the page is provided. Link to skip navigation has no visible anchor text, and is provided specifically for people using a screen reader.

Access keys
Most browsers support jumping to specific areas of the web site by typing specific keyboard shortcuts, known as Access Keys. The following access keys are defined on this Web site:

2

How to use Access Keys in your browser?

  • Internet Explorer 5+:
ALT (CTRL for Macintosh) + access key + ENTER
  • Mozilla 2.0 (includes Mozilla Firefox):
SHIFT + ALT (CTRL for Macintosh) keys + access key

5. Browser customisation

We have designed our site to be compatible with most screen readers and adaptable for use by partially sighted customers. Depending on your internet browser you can:

  • Alter the colour and size of most text
  • Alter the colour and size of text links
  • Alter the line length by changing the size and shape of your browser window
  • Use your own colour scheme preferences

Read instructions on how to set up your browser preferences for more information.
